Today, we are covering the etiquette guidelines for addressing wedding invitations for mailing. For those invitation styles that come with double envelopes, this would apply to the outer envelopes (a previous post covered addressing the inner envelopes).

Remember, it is recommended that you address your envelopes before inserting your wedding invitations. This avoids having an uneven writing surface and prevents any indentations on the invitations.

Addressing wedding invitations should be done in handwriting versus using printed or typed labels. If you have double envelopes, the handwriting on both envelopes should be by the same person and in the same ink color, either black or blue, so everything matches.

Mailing envelopes should be addressed using formal names and WITHOUT using abbreviations with the exception of non-professional titles (Mr., Mrs., Jr., Esq., etc.). Professional titles, such as Doctor, should be spelled out.

With the exception of "One," all house numbers are written in figure form and no commas are used when separating digits in house numbers. Apartment, suite, rural route numbers and zip codes are written in figure form. If you are unsure of a ZIP code, visit the U.S. Postal Service's website, www.usps.com, where you can easily look up ZIP codes.

Do not use symbols; spell out the word "and".

When it comes to wedding invitations, there are several types of folds that you may come across while shopping for your style. Here are explanations of some of the more common folds.

An invitation folder has one fold down the center of the paper. The fold can appear either at the top or on the side making it a folder. Your wording may appear either on the front of the folder or inside as shown here.

A french-fold means the paper is folded in half twice creating a four-paneled invitation. This fold is most commonly used with parchment invitations.

Gate-folds can be fashioned with either three or four panels where the two outside panels fold inward to meet in the center. In an open gate fold, there are three panels, with the bottom panel being twice the size of each folded panel. In a closed gatefold, there are four panels of roughly equal size where the outer panels are folded inward together. In some cases, the folded panels are uniquely designed to interlock together as pictured here.

Tri-fold occurs when the paper is folded twice either vertically or horizontally to form a three-panel invitation. Both outside panels are folded inward so they cover the middle panel.

A z-fold is created in accordion fashion when the paper is folded twice in opposite directions creating an invitation with three panels.

Of course not all wedding invitations have folds, but now you will be familiar with the various types of folded styles you may happen to see.

Rehearsal Invitations

Chances are you are planning to hold a dinner following your rehearsal the evening before your wedding. When you are putting together your guest list and figuring out how many wedding invitations to order, make sure you consider the following:

Gather everyone's guest lists (bride's, groom's, bride's parents', groom's parents').
Make sure all those involved in your wedding are on your guest list - bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers, etc.
Only one (1) invitation is needed per married couple.

Proper Wording and Spelling Tips

There are certain things to be mindful of when it comes to wedding invitation etiquette in regards to proper wording and spelling.

Punctuation use within a wedding invitation verse is not always typical since periods do not appear at the end of sentences but only after title abbreviations such as Mr. and Mrs.

Commas appear between day and date and also city and state. They are also allowed within sentences when necessary.
The first word of a sentence is capitalized even though sentences do not end in punctuation. Not every verse line will start with a capital letter since sentences sometimes continue to more than one line.
All proper names, title abbreviations, days of the week, months, and years are capitalized.
Dates, years and times are spelled out instead of listing them as numbers.
- Saturday, the third of January
- Two thousand and ten
- at two o'clock in the afternoon
Numbers are acceptable when listed as part of a street address (10 Main Street).
There are many ways to word the line that actually extends the invitation to guests but if the word 'honor' is used it is most commonly spelled as 'honour' to be more formal - 'request the honour of your presence'.
Words, such as 'Street', contained in address lines are never abbreviated. Even the state name is written out completely.

Everyone is familiar with wedding invitations, but there are actually many other terms that are associated with them. Here are some of the more common terms that you are likely to encounter while shopping for your invitations.

Announcements: For those people you would like to inform of your recent marriage but who won't be invited to your wedding, you can choose to mail them an announcement card. They can be printed on matching invitation paper with the verse reading that your wedding has already taken place. Suggested mailing time is on the day of your wedding or immediately after.

Double Envelopes: Traditionally, formal wedding invitations come with two large envelopes. The outer envelope is actually the mailing envelope that will contain the name and address of your guests. The inner envelope holds your invitation along with any insert pieces and is addressed with only your guests' names. This envelope is left unsealed and placed inside the outer envelope.

Engraved Invitations: This is a time-honored printing process of raising ink on paper through a process of etching metal plates, filling the etches with ink, then pressing paper into the plates. Engraved wedding invitations tend to be more expensive.
